Vision Through the Ages: A Parent’s Guide to Milestones

mother and daughter an eye exam

Growth spurts in children are familiar to all parents. It is easy to track their physical growth. However, tracking their eye development can be trickier.

Understanding the typical vision milestones can help parents identify potential issues early. At San Ramon Family Optometry in San Ramon, we offer pediatric eye exams. These exams help track and support your child's vision growth.

Infants (0–12 Months)

Newborns can't see well at first. Studies show they mostly see in black and white. Their color vision starts to develop around 4 months. They can see objects and people close to them, but their central vision is very limited. However, in the first year, babies begin to focus on faces, track moving objects, and develop depth perception.

By around 6 months, they should be able to follow objects with both eyes and reach for things accurately. The American Optometric Association recommends a comprehensive eye exam at 6 months to detect any early issues.

Toddlers (1–3 Years)

Toddlers develop hand-eye co-ordination and start recognizing shapes and colors at this stage. They should be able to focus on objects both near and far. An eye exam for kids aged 2 to 3 can help find problems like crossed eyes or lazy eye. As is the case with all healthcare, the earlier an ocular condition is treated, the better the chances of preserving vision.

Preschoolers (3–5 Years)

During preschool, children build visual skills needed for reading and learning. These skills include visual acuity, eye teaming, and depth perception. A comprehensive eye exam before starting school ensures they are visually prepared for academic activities.

School-Age Children (6–12 Years)

As academic demands increase, so does the need for optimal vision. Children may experience issues like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Regular yearly eye exams are crucial. They help find and fix problems. This gives your child a better chance for clear vision, confidence, and independence.

Teenagers (13–18 Years)

Teenagers face increased screen time and academic pressures, which can impact vision. They may also become more self-conscious about wearing glasses. Our practice offers various corrective options, including contact lenses, to suit their lifestyle and preferences.
